What is the Formula SAE

History:
The Formula SAE developed from a small on-campus event with off-road vehicles in the 70th, over to the first real Formula SAE contest in Texas 1980 into a recognized competition with own regulation and a correct tradition. From the beginning on the event was supported by large companies, like General Motors, Daimler Chrysler as well as Ford. They were continually supporting the students with knowledge and finances. The Formula SAE is a technical competition with a sporty character for students of the automotive engineering, mechanical engineering and the electro-technology.

Task:

Content, function and aim of the contest is the construction and production of a racing car considering economic aspects. Principle of this task is the acceptance a production company engaged the team, in order to manufacture prototypes driver for evaluation for the non-professional free time racing. Thus the racing car has to exhibit for example very good attributes regarding handling, acceleration, and braking force. The formula racecar must be a monoposto, which costs little and is reliable as well as simple to prosecute. Additionally, the car's market value increases through other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and the use of readily available, standard purchase components. The fictitious manufacturer plans to produce 1000 cars each year at a maximum price of 25.000 Dollars.

Goal/Use:

The purpose of this competition is to give the students opportunities to increase their knowledge, to collect practical skills and to set up networks with people for future career.
